Alicia Dietz

Alicia Dietz is a furniture maker and artist with a focus on wood and concrete. Her work is influenced by her military service, landscape, and the idea of the individual within the collective. As an officer and Blackhawk Helicopter Maintenance Test Pilot for over a decade in the U.S. Army, Alicia served in Iraq and was stationed all over the world, including Germany, Alaska, and Egypt. While seemingly two different areas of expertise, her career in the Army unexpectedly prepared her to design and build. The discipline necessary to command soldiers and to test broken helicopters translated into an astute attention to detail and unwavering work ethic.

She received a BSJ in Advertising/Journalism from Ohio University and two Woodworking and Furniture Making Certificates from Vermont Woodworking School. She interned with Wendy Maruyama before receiving an MFA in Wood from Virginia Commonwealth University. Alicia has exhibited nationally and abroad. Exhibition venues include Houston Center for Contemporary Craft (TX), Center for Art in Wood (PA), Northern State University (SD), ArtSpace (NC), Salmagundi Club of New York (NYC), and The National Veterans Art Museum (IL). Dietz has taught at Virginia Commonwealth University, Haystack School of Crafts, Appalachian Center for Craft, The Visual Arts Center of Richmond, STEAM Studios of UNC Asheville, and Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts. She started Alicia Dietz Studios in 2016 and has been running a successful one-woman business since. She lives andworks in Richmond, Virginia with her partner of 21 years.
