Exhibition
Likeness
More than a mere image of a person, a portrait wields the power of perception. It can reveal a person’s nuances as well as an artist’s relationship to them. Specifically, this exhibition focuses on the ability of portraiture to exalt, empower, and elevate the subject. Through painting, thread, ceramics, and found materials, each likeness is inspired by both an individual and the communities to which they are connected. They disclose a resemblance to and reverence for the artists’ families and ancestors, whether they are chosen or inherited. Using material strategies like the softness of quilting or the placement of devotional objects within a gilded frame, these portraits celebrate loved ones and insist upon their value, not just for the artist but for what they bring to the world. Embellished and meticulous, these portraits encourage us to uplift, support, and even heal one another.
This exhibition is generously sponsored by Brenda and Larry Thompson. Curated by Erika Diamond.
