Leslie Fandrich is a feminist, interdisciplinary artist interested in family relationships and embodied experiences. Surprising No One, His Sudden Burst of Comprehension Only Made It Harder, is an abstract fabric painting part of a series titled “Residual Understanding (The Nature of Relationships)” that includes works that were begun in 2017 and completed two years later. Each piece is named with a poetic sentence alluding to aspects of relationships that could be personal and intimate, or abstract and formal. Using collage techniques as a framework, Leslie cuts up and reconfigures stained and painted pieces of fabric and canvas, merging disparate parts into dynamic wholes.
