Description

I make collaged paintings and drawing-based installations that explore grief, healing, and resilience. Sister 1 and Sister 2 are layered drawings and paintings on shaped aluminum dibond that form densely nested worlds of pattern.  I start initially with drawing, often basing my images on medical or crime scene photography.  The images explore the notion of the wound but then the layering of color and the fluidness of the ink mediums produce an organic overlay.  I utilize this layering as a way of nature reclaiming and growing over the pain, producing a beautiful scar.  I refer to these works as sisters in homage to my own older sister but also to the community of sisters that I feel around me, both known and unknown.   Phoenix is a suspended installation of graphite on drafting film with sewing. Using the visual elements of abstracted wings, this work was created during the pandemic lockdown and demonstrates the notion of creating a new world from within. In making Phoenix, I was expressing a prayer for my own renewal and for that of the world around me. As I drew on each section of the drafting film, I immersed myself in the silence of the patterns.  Once each section was completed, the drawings were sewn together with a sewing machine, again reinforcing the action of repair that is central to my practice.
