Description

Working in wood is a struggle between man and nature. The constraints of wood as a material are often at odds with the desired result. The design intent of my chairs is to bring a sense of movement and life to an inanimate object. Meanwhile the tree just wants to be a tree. I try to use techniques that align with wood’s nature. Splitting a green log into strips and steam bending them creates spindles strong enough to support the back while remaining flexible enough to move with the body. A deeply contoured seat carved into thick timber is comfortable to sit in. Comfort is important in my work. A chair is touched probably more than any other type of furniture and must withstand all kinds of forces.
