Description

The fuchsia silk velvet medallion features raised and flat beadwork, backed with red Italian leather and strung with freshwater pearls. Pollinators are an important part of the ecosystem. Often only honeybees are mentioned in the conversation but there are more than 400 different bee species in NY state, not to mention the other types of pollinators that help keep our plants vibrant and thriving. As a gardener, I appreciate the work that pollinators do. The Three sisters, the Life Sustainers, are often represented by motifs of three, in this medallion, the three sprays represent the Life Sustainers. With the small pollinator buzzing around the sprays, I want to showcase both the Life Sustainers and the pollinators that give them life, a delicate balance to an important system.

About this Artist

Samantha Jacobs

Samantha Jacobs

Samantha Jacobs is affiliated with the Seneca Nation of Indians-Cattaraugus Territory. She works in diverse arts, including beadwork, tufting, traditional clothing, and jewelry. She originally learned from her mother as a child and was part of a dance troupe called the Buffalo Creek Dancers. When she outgrew her outfits, she sewed new ones. As an adult, she has committed her time to learning new forms to enhance and compliment her traditional crafting. She likes to make items that tell a story and reflect the nature around her; she’ll bead a pretty flower she sees outside her window or some coral she saw on vacation. She loves to listen to audiobooks, so she can work with her hands while enjoying a good story. She usually make pieces at home until she heads to the local Heritage Center in the evening, where she and her mother host weekly bead and craft classes.…
