Description
In my work, I draw parallels between recognizable objects, the body and the experiences lived within it to create contemporary vanitas imagery and discuss modern anxieties through antiquity. My pieces often focus on the recontextualization of symbolism historically present within the still life genre and investigates the ways in which they remain applicable to a contemporary landscape. I began crafting soft sculptures as a result of the overturning of Roe v. Wade and to help make sense of the ramifications regarding the Dobbs decision on a personal level. As the pieces developed, they began to encompass themes of bodily autonomy, consumption, expectations of gender and the implications of social construction on psychological states through a personal and symbolic lens.
Hand embroidery and fibers are at the core of my creative practice. It is a medium that has traditionally been relegated to 'women's work,' and continues to face marginalization today. As a practitioner of this craft, I aim to challenge gendered assumptions and seek to reclaim it as a symbol of creativity, growth and resilience.
