Description
The ethereal quality is a result of experiments in trying to get an iridescent surface on the glass. There are some glass artifacts that have an iridescence achieved from being buried for centuries- metal oxides on the surface of the glass react with minerals in the soil. To achieve a similar effect, I am using a technique that was initially developed by NASA for use in windows on rockets. I love the fact that it's quite literally a space age technique but one that mimics a surface seen on 5000 year old glass. I try to make forms that capitalize on this technique, showing the different colours seen from different angles, so much so that sometimes you cannot pinpoint exactly what colour the glass is. In that moment, it is mutable and unknowable, an analogy for glass itself.

Katherine Gray
Gray received her undergraduate degree from Ontario College of Art in Toronto, and her MFA from Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI. Her work has been exhibited at Heller Gallery in New York City, Urban Glass in New York, and most recently in solo shows at the Craft Contemporary (formerly the Craft and Folk Art Museum) in Los Angeles and the Toledo Museum of Art. Her work has been reviewed in the New York Observer.com, Artforum.com and in the LA Times. Images of her glasswork have also appeared in the New York Times Design magazine. She was the recipient of the Libenský/ Brychtová Award from the Pilchuck Glass School for her artistic and educational contributions to the field, and she has been inducted into the College of Fellows of the American Craft Council and is a Fellow of the Corning Museum of Glass.
