Description

The name orangutan means "man of the forest" in the Malay language. Many of the animals I sculpt are endangered. Starting with a block of clay and an idea of size and proportion I shape the animal, usually with a photo as a guide. No molds are used. The animals are then air dried, bisque fired, and then wood fired. With the vast number of variables, no animals are ever the same. Organic firing is perfect for them. The flames, ash, and sprayed sodium carbonate solution bring unusual earthy tones. I want them to look like they could have lived. It is so satisfying to share it with an appreciative viewer and environmentalist.
