Description
My work is rooted in a deep personal history shaped by cancer. From a young age, I witnessed the toll this disease can take—losing my mother, three aunts, and a cousin to cancer left an indelible mark. For much of my life, I believed cancer was an affliction that touched only adults. However, research reveals a far more sobering reality: approximately 250 children around the world lose their lives to cancer each day. Childhood cancer is not rare—it is tragically underrecognized. Through my sculptural practice, I aim to raise awareness about childhood cancer and give form to the emotional complexities that surround it. Clay, my primary medium, is both symbolic and purposeful. I draw a parallel between the transformation of clay and the progression of tumors. In the early stages, both are malleable—open to change and intervention. But as time passes, they harden, becoming resistant and unyielding. This metaphor speaks to the urgency of early detection, treatment, and support. My installations incorporate facial expressions and familiar, everyday objects—pacifiers, hospital gowns, IV bags—to evoke the silent narratives of young patients and their families. These elements serve as emotional touchstones, allowing viewers to engage with the vulnerability, fear, and resilience that define their experience. Through this work, I strive to be a voice for the voiceless. I hope to not only express the grief and suffering endured by those affected by childhood cancer, but also to illuminate their strength, courage, and enduring hope for a future free from disease.About this Artist
