Description

I am an NYC based multimedia artist specializing in textiles and fiber and working across art and design. My work varies from small, stitched wall pieces to large scale installations that incorporate my diverse textile artworks, paintings, drawings, video, and sometimes the artwork of others, as well as design objects and elements.

Many art and design movements are resonant for me: Pattern and Decoration, Op Art, Memphis Design, Arte Povera, Light andSpace, Surrealism and more, and I find inspiration everywhere, but especially in the materials and processes I use, along with nature, architecture, science, metaphysics, and in the very experience of being alive and engaging with others.

I worked for some years in fashion and made a name for myself as a pioneer of innovative knitwear, before segueing into art-making and circling back to now a combination of art and design that allows me to work fluidly, with my art projects dovetailing into design world commissions and vice versa.

About this Artist

Liz Collins

Liz Collins works fluidly between art and design, with emphasis and expertise in textile media. Embracing abstraction, optics, and extreme material contrasts, Collins explores the boundaries between painting, fiber arts and installation, intuitively laying bare expressions of energy, emotion, and the viscereality of existence. Collin’s solo exhibitions and installations have been exhibited in New York at the Museum of Arts and Design and the Tang Museum, Saratoga Springs; AMP, Provincetown, MA; and the Knoxville Museum of Art, TN. Her work has been included in group exhibitions at MoMA, the New Museum, Leslie Lohman Museum, Museum of FIT, the Drawing Center, BRIC, and Smackmellon, all in New York as well as Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery, CA, and Addison Gallery of American Art at Phillips Academy, Andover, MA. Collins’ honors include a USA Fellowship, a MacColl Johnson Fellowship, Foundation for Contemporary Arts & Artist Relief grants, Drawing Center Open Sessions and residencies at Siena Art Institute, MacDowell, Yaddo, Haystack, and…
