Description
Through curated space and abstracted sculptures that reference the viewer’s body, Gut Feeling, acknowledges the viewer’s experience as the focal point of the exhibition. Considering the whole gallery as an art object, I designed the white cube to use both positive and negative space. The sculptures act as one seemingly unified system that guides the viewer through the exhibition in a counterclockwise rotation inward. The viewer follows the forms as they puncture through the walls of the gallery, while considering their own body’s relationship to the forms being seen. The scale of the forms, sculptural placement, and sensory experience engages directly with the viewer; it asks them to become humble in the string that connects all of us despite our differences, our abject bodies. Shelby Fleming holds a BFA in Studio Art from Southern Illinois University of Edwardsville and MFA from the University of Arkansas School of Art. Fleming’s artwork has been exhibited nationally and internationally at venues such as the CICA Museum, South Korea, the International Sculpture Conference, The Little Berlin Gallery, Art Saint Louis and the Kansas City Art Institute. Her most recent work titled Gut Feeling, focuses on the viewer’s experience with abstracted bodily forms. The scale, arrangement, and sensory experience causes the viewer to consider their own body in relation to the sculptures and space.About this Artist
