Description
When thinking of racial injustice and inequality, most people think immediately of issues of systemic racism, economic inequality and the like. Rarely do we, as a society, consider injustice and inequality in terms of things like consumer goods. My chosen form of activism is not simply to bring attention to or to mourn injustice, but to actively imagine and create the kind world I want myself and my children to live in. To combat inequality and increase diversity in consumer goods, I created Lucy St. (Lucy Street), a collection of art, wearable art and retail merchandise inspired solely by the cultural traditions, food, language and rituals of the African diasporic experience. Like the actual street that ran through my childhood community, which was a place where many diverse members of the community converged to socialize, and celebrate, Lucy St. is a place where Black culture converges, is celebrated in all its beautiful and varying forms, and made available to be enjoyed by all.

Chris Friday
Chris Friday is a multidisciplinary artist based in Miami. Her work serves as both a contemplative reflection of and counter-narrative to the pervasive under/misrepresentations of Blackness in mainstream media and popular culture. Friday’s portfolio features large-scale works on paper, murals, video, ceramics, projections, photography, comic illustrations, and social practice/activism through curating. Friday’s work has been included in exhibitions locally, nationally, and internationally, including recent solo exhibitions such as “Good Times” curated by Laura Novoa and presented at Oolite Arts (2023), “One More River” presented at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee, and her work as part of “The Cartography Project” presented by the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. (2022).
