Description

The strawberry earrings are made in the same style as the same tourist item pincushions sold in larger sizes at various destinations like Niagara Falls, the Worlds Fair, the State fair and more. The pincushions were a pretty, yet useful item, during a time when most women practiced needlecraft. Nowadays the art of mending and sewing isn’t as widely known so the pincushions have become ornamental. As an avid earring collector myself, I enjoy the look of the strawberry earrings. The earrings are made of velvet stuffed with polyfil and a pinch of seed beads to give them a bit of weight. The Haudenosaunee consider the strawberry a medicine as it is the first berry of the year.

About this Artist

Samantha Jacobs

Samantha Jacobs

Samantha Jacobs is affiliated with the Seneca Nation of Indians-Cattaraugus Territory. She works in diverse arts, including beadwork, tufting, traditional clothing, and jewelry. She originally learned from her mother as a child and was part of a dance troupe called the Buffalo Creek Dancers. When she outgrew her outfits, she sewed new ones. As an adult, she has committed her time to learning new forms to enhance and compliment her traditional crafting. She likes to make items that tell a story and reflect the nature around her; she’ll bead a pretty flower she sees outside her window or some coral she saw on vacation. She loves to listen to audiobooks, so she can work with her hands while enjoying a good story. She usually make pieces at home until she heads to the local Heritage Center in the evening, where she and her mother host weekly bead and craft classes.…
