“Facets” is part of a series which features angled blocks of cedar exposing the end grain, each rotated 90 degrees to accentuate the variation of growth in the rings. This piece is a three dimensional visualization of the environment. By stripping away the outer layers of bark and exposing the internal rings we view the tree from the inside out. The sculpture acts as a living “hard drive” of the earth, turning invisible climate data into a tangible, physical typography. Trees rely on the exact same groundwater and weather cycles as agricultural crops. Just as a scarred ring shows a tree under stress from drought, it simultaneously serves as a direct proxy for failed harvests and soil degradation. The rings become a historical blueprint of food insecurity.
