Description

Growing up as a mixed Spanish, Welsh and Liberian woman- child of a culturally “white” mother and immigrant Liberian father- in a predominantly white and heavily religious town- Chloe King was quickly informed of all the ways she was and is considered an uncategorizable “other” within her community. Cousin Kedas Lotioned Legs is an in-photo collage that explores perceptions of Blackness through both a micro and macro lens. Using a wide range of printed and real props King draws attention to differing perceptions and expressions of blackness and their. Complicating and questioning African, Black, and white cultural stereotypes, and ideologies in hopes to further unpack ideas of culture and community.
