Description

This still-life is a from a project called "Perennial Favorites ", a series of studies of perennial flowers, roses, and flowering shrubs all grown by the photographer . The goal of the series is to isolate, commemorate and give lengthier life to botanicals that have a very short , what the French call , "floraison" . These plants, especially the perennials, come and go every year and have normally three or four months of life before they go dormant and at best ten to fourteen days of bloom at their peak. The still-life or table -top of a flower, coupled with cloth and paper patterns can evoke the style and era of decor . I always had opportunities to craft still-lifes but realized how much I loved the color and , form of the perennial species . A photograph records, details and gives a sense of the importance to living things . i want to combine "perennial " objects with period-specificity . This series is being compiled into a book-length study .

Gary Cardot

Gary Cardot is a graduate of Ohio University and the University of Massachusetts where he received bachelors and master’s degrees in history. After teaching history and working as a director of the arts program at the Martin Luther King Center in Erie, Pennsylvania, he studied photography at the California Institute of the Arts and graduated with an MFA in art from CalArts in 1990. He taught photography and art history as an assistant professor at Mercyhurst University in Erie, Pennsylvania from 1990 to 2024. He is currently an independent scholar and finishing a book on the history of photographic postcards of Erie and an interpretation of their contents with an emphasis on urban design. He has exhibited in galleries and museums nationally, both juried and invitational shows, and was awarded a Mid-Atlantic Arts grant to document architecture in Buffalo, New York. He has worked in landscape studies, architectural photography, and still lifes.
