Description

Baskets, like bodies, are containers with multiple abilities: they both hold and take up space. I construct woven basket-like objects using materials that are embedded with human activity and applied to armatures that are reactive like a human body. I build armatures, inspired by traditional basket frames, out of wire and plastic tubing. I choose these materials based on their pliability; I want my armatures to physically respond to tension that I apply to them. Onto these structures I wrap my own worn clothing which I first breakdown into strips and dye. I am imbuing these flexible forms with textiles that have held and recorded my action. To weave the sides of these vessels, I use elastic bra strapping, another material that holds and forms the human figure. My aim is to produce a stand in for the body. The objects I make are both symbols and present-day artifacts: sculpted figures and the living proof of my dedication to interact with and reflect my surroundings through what I create.
