Click HERE to view full video. This video was created during my Chautauqua Visual Arts Residency under Kalup Linzy’s mentorship. The assignment was to comment or on one of Kalup’s videos/performances. What stuck out to me the most about those were the characteristics of his different personas. I wanted to examine the process of becoming a character. The idea of transforming into something other. In this video I physically became my proxy, Bubbles. The reoccurring figure in my work who is characterized by her electric blue hair and red lips. Bubbles navigates these landscapes documenting, archiving and capturing the essence of what it means to be both trapped and free of these spaces. The choice of using the anthem is to analyze the concepts of conditioning a nation or country through educational systems.
