Description

To be black in America is to be simultaneously invisible and highly conspicuous. This piece was born out of my interest in the form and function of armor blended with my experience as the son of Haitian immigrants. Not only does the plywood physically lay over the plane of the canvas while functioning as the background of the image, but it also extends down the neck of the figure. The extension of the sky over the neck of the figure takes the form of a bevor, used in medieval times to protect the knight’s neck.
