Tree Portraits
Peter Hoffer’s stunning landscape paintings of trees, hills, and sky recall classically romantic paintings using traditional varnishing techniques popularized in the 19th century. The images feature nondescript views of landscapes, to which he applies many coats of reflective varnishes, sometimes between layers of paint. Over time, the surfaces show natural wear such as discoloration and cracks. so that they become rough terrain like landscapes themselves. This exhibition is generously sponsored by the Friends of CVA. Curated by Judy Barie.
