Description
My work lies in the spectrum of seduction and repulsion. I explore this duality through ceramics, specifically ceramic surfaces and objects that evoke conflicting reactions by way of relatable but subverted forms.
I also engage with art history through forms of presentation, such as bodégon and vanitas paintings and still life imagery, specifically the fruit motif. These artworks were often intended to be didactic - often created from a place of moral superiority - and frequently displayed objects and fruits considered exotic during the colonial era. This imagery carries multiple meanings that allow, among other things, grotesque histories to be presented through beauty.
Working from the coded space of still life imagery, I appreciate, examine and extract to create my own compositions. Each arrangement and composition is an open ended invitation to the viewer to draw upon both the art historical and contemporary associations contained within.
