Description
I create art that maps, blends, and augments the unique physical and imaginative space that is embedded in the area with my exploration and expression around multi-cultural histories, diaspora identity, interpersonal dissociation and reconciliation. Forms, colors, and materials are symbols that indicate personal histories; I deconstruct and reconstruct a collection of love/hate, pleasing/traumatic memories of intimate relationships and belonging through multi-layering process — most of the works you see now have different layers underneath them. Chinese ink is embedded in or emerging from the layers within colorful paints. As a Moscow-born-Chinese female and only child who immigrated to the U.S. during high school by myself, my works are mediums to link the complex multi-cultural consciousnesses that I consciously and unconsciously bring together to form my"selves". My works investigate and recontextualize my visions that are linked to the concept of physical and spiritual space, the self, and how one breaks from past selves— rebuilds new conceptions of self through the communities and experiences that surround them — and rebridges "archives" of themselves through a process that is as much blending as it is destroying.

Sunny Moxin Chen
Sunny Moxin Chen (she/they) is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Boston. She holds MFA Painting from Boston University and BFA in Painting & Studio for Interrelated Media from Massachusetts College of Art & Design . Her work was recently exhibited at the Main Street Arts (Clifton Springs, NY) and got the “Best in Show” prize. She has also shown works at the Piano Craft Gallery (Boston), Boston University Art Galleries, Cambridge Arts Association, Musa Collective (online), Project V Gallery (NYC/online), and the Hive Art Community (Brooklyn, NY). She has previously worked as an assistant in many non-profit art organizations such as MassArt Art Museum (Boston), UCCA Center for Contemporary Art (Beijing), WhiteBox Art Space (NYC), and she has worked as a co-director and curator at the Godine Family Gallery (Boston).
