CVA Visiting Artists Lecture: Judy Barie and Erika Diamond

Judy Barie is an artist who creates contemporary abstract works. Inspired by the likes of Brice Marden and Elizabeth Murray, Barie combines layers of color, gestural marks and rich patterns on birch panels. For over 30 years, Barie has developed a visual vocabulary of her particular mark making that exists in both singular paintings and series of works. After earning a BFA from West Virginia University, Barie spent a year-long printmaking residency at Atelier 17, now known as Atelier Contrepoint in Paris, France.  

Barie is represented by Artists Circle Gallery in Bethesda MD, Bonfoey Gallery in Cleveland Ohio and Zynka Gallery in Pittsburgh, PA. She has had solo exhibitions at Kathryn Markel Fine Arts in NYC, Cumberland Gallery in Nashville, TN and G2 Gallery in Scottsdale AZ.  Her work resides in the permanent collections of the Charlotte Printmakers Society in NC, Hallmark Corporation in Atlanta GA, the Children’s Museum in Pittsburgh PA, General Motors headquarters in Chicago IL and LaGrange Museum in Georgia. Barie lives and works in Pittsburgh, PA where she also acts as a consultant for Contemporary Craft and Oxford Development. She splits her time between Pittsburgh and Chautauqua NY, where she applies her aesthetic vision to curate several exhibitions each summer.

German-born and the daughter of two ballet dancers, Erika Diamond is a textile-focused artist, curator, and educator. She received a BFA in Sculpture from Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA in Fiber from Virginia Commonwealth University. She has exhibited nationally and abroad, and her costumes have been commissioned by Charlotte Ballet. Exhibition venues include Dinner Gallery, Form & Concept Gallery, Kent State University Museum, Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art, Dorsky Curatorial Projects, and International Museum of Art & Science. Her work is included the collections of San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles and Ally Bank among other private collections. Residencies include: McColl Center for Visual Art; STARworks; ABK Weaving Center; Platte Forum; and UNC Asheville STEAM Studio. She has received grants from Haywood County Arts Council, Fiber Art Now, VCU Arts, and Arts & Science Council of NC. Diamond has taught at Virginia Commonwealth University, Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design, and Penland School of Crafts. Diamond is Assistant Director of Galleries at Chautauqua Institution (NY).
